Part of Sponsorship brand risk
Reviewing a sponsor association after a public controversy
Assess the facts, live brand association and agreement before deciding whether to continue, pause, change or end a sponsorship.
Review the actual sponsorship after a controversy: establish what is known, find where the brand still appears, check what the agreement permits and decide whether the partnership can still serve its purpose.
The choice may be to continue with controls, narrow or pause activity, seek an agreed change, or end the relationship under its terms. Record why, and revisit the decision as evidence develops.
Review sequence after a public controversy
- Define the immediate decisionFrame a decision the team can make now and name the authorised decision-maker.
- Inventory the current associationList live and scheduled material, control, next use and correction options.
- Assess facts and effects togetherSeparate confirmed events, allegations, the property's response and the sponsor's interpretation.
- Choose and record a responseContinue with controls, narrow or pause activity, seek an agreed change, or seek an end.
- Revisit the decisionReview on a material finding, a substantive response or before the next affected activity.
Define the immediate decision
A controversy may concern the property, one of its people, another partner or an activity near which the sponsor appeared. Identify the connection. Is the brand named in coverage? Is its mark visible in current material? Is a joint appearance scheduled?
Frame a decision the team can make now, such as: Can the next planned sponsor activity proceed responsibly on the information available? Name the person authorised to decide. The team may have to act before every public claim is resolved.
Inventory the current association
List live pages, queued posts, advertisements, signs and other material that describes or displays the relationship. Record who controls each item, its next scheduled use and whether correction or a pause is possible. The sponsor may be unable to remove material controlled by the property. Pausing a campaign does not itself end the agreement.
Check the signed agreement and authorised changes for name and logo use, notices, review processes and committed work. Where a clause's effect is unclear, obtain advice before describing a contractual outcome as settled.

Assess facts and effects together
Separate confirmed events from allegations, the property's response and the sponsor's interpretation. Ask what evidence could change the assessment and when it may become available. A property statement establishes its stated position; it does not automatically prove a disputed claim.
Consider people affected by the issue and the brand's stated purpose. A safety or safeguarding concern may need operational action and specialist escalation while the public facts remain incomplete. Ask whether a scheduled promotion could convey an inaccurate impression about what the sponsor currently supports.
Choose and record a response
Question to answer
- Continue with controls
- Can the activity still serve the agreed purpose responsibly?
- Narrow or pause activity
- Could a particular live use create an inaccurate impression while facts are checked?
- Seek an agreed change
- Would a defined alternative still meet both parties' needs?
- Seek an end
- Is the association unsuitable, or does an agreed condition apply?
Record
- Continue with controls
- Controls, reasons and review date.
- Narrow or pause activity
- Assets affected, authority, contract position and next decision point.
- Seek an agreed change
- Proposed rights, costs, permissions and acceptance.
- Seek an end
- Evidence, advice, notice and remaining obligations.
These options are not automatic contractual entitlements. Give any pause an owner and review point. If the brand comments publicly, say what it has done and what remains uncertain. Do not describe a pause as termination or an allegation as a finding.
Response options and what to record
- Continue with controlsQuestion: Can the activity still serve the agreed purpose responsibly? Record: controls, reasons and review date.
- Narrow or pause activityQuestion: Could a particular live use create an inaccurate impression while facts are checked? Record: assets affected, authority, contract position and next decision point.
- Seek an agreed changeQuestion: Would a defined alternative still meet both parties' needs? Record: proposed rights, costs, permissions and acceptance.
- Seek an endQuestion: Is the association unsuitable, or does an agreed condition apply? Record: evidence, advice, notice and remaining obligations.
Revisit the decision
Review when a material finding or substantive response arrives, or before the next affected activity. Preserve the earlier decision and the evidence available at the time. At close-out, record which material changed, which obligations were addressed and which controls need revision.
