Evaluating an esports property's audience evidence
An esports sponsorship deck may combine viewers, views, followers and attendees.
An esports sponsorship deck may mix viewers, views, followers and attendees. Before pricing, ask what each figure counts, over which period and on which channels. The aim is reachable people for the rights sold, not the largest number in the deck.
Request comparable definitions
For live streams, request average and peak concurrent viewers, unique viewers where available, watch time and geography. For social content, separate followers from reach and interactions on sponsored posts. For events, distinguish tickets issued from actual attendance. Ask whether co-streams or creator channels are included and whether audiences overlap.
British Esports' funding guide asks organisations what evidence of impact they have. Apply the same test from the buyer's side: request source dashboards or a clear measurement method, and compare the property with a prior event of similar scale. A world final and a regular season match are not equivalent inventory.
Use SullyGnome for a public Twitch cross-check: it reports average viewers, peak viewers and hours watched, with date ranges including 3, 7, 14, 30, 90, 180 and 365 days. Match the claimed period as closely as possible, and note its UTC timezone and language filter. Treat the comparison as a cross-check, not an audit of the property's figures.
Streams Charts' Audience Geo & Demographics tool covers Twitch, YouTube and Kick, with country share, average view duration by country and audience overlap between creators. Its analysis of the 1,000 most-watched channels on each platform over 30 days reported US audience shares of 28% for Twitch, 15% for Kick and 14% for YouTube Gaming. Those platform-wide figures are context, not a benchmark for an individual event.
For an Australian reference, IAB Australia's Video Measurement Framework identifies options including audience reach, brand safety, viewability and ad attention. Use those categories to ask what a sponsored video measure represents; do not treat ad attention or viewability as a substitute for live concurrent viewers.
Connect evidence to the proposed rights
If the brand is buying a desk graphic in a broadcast, total tournament social followers are background only. Ask for the audience of that broadcast and where the graphic appears. For a creator stream deal, request that creator's recent relevant sessions, not a team-wide aggregate.
For an RRQ audience claim, look for the audience growth, peak moments, language and platform splits tracked by the Esports Charts Team Dashboard. Ask that the figures be supplied with their period and measurement definitions, then check whether they describe the audience relevant to the item being priced.
Record uncertainties. Platform analytics may not deduplicate the same viewer across streams, and geographic splits may be incomplete. Price and evaluate the package on the best relevant evidence available, with a reporting commitment that repeats the same definitions after activation.
