Checking geographic audience fit for a sports property
Check a sports property's audience locations against your service area and the exact rights being offered.
Compare the places your business can serve with where people could encounter the specific sponsorship right. A national fan figure cannot stand in for the audience of a selected match, venue activity or regional message.
Define the service area and encounter
List the postcodes, suburbs, states or delivery zones where an interested person could realistically use your offer. Include limits such as store coverage, appointment capacity or delivery availability. If the sponsorship mainly serves a community purpose, state that separately from a sales aim.
Name the asset. People attending a home fixture, receiving a club email or watching a competition broadcast may be in different locations. The venue address shows where the event happens, not where its attendees live.
Examine each location figure
Ask for a recent breakdown for the fixture, channel or activity you intend to buy. Record:
| Field | Question |
|---|---|
| Population | Ticket buyers, attendees, members, viewers or respondents? |
| Period | Which season, fixtures or reporting dates? |
| Location basis | Purchase postcode, stated residence, platform estimate or another method? |
| Coverage | What share has a usable location, and who is missing? |
| Service-area fit | How many fall within the area you defined, using that same population and method? |
A ticket buyer may purchase for someone else. A survey describes its respondents unless its design supports a wider estimate. Leave unknown locations unknown; do not assign them to the sponsor's area. If the seller can provide only a property-wide figure, ask whether a narrower fixture or channel can be documented.
Key Geographic Metrics for Sports Sponsorship Evaluation
- Population Basis
- Ticket buyers (not survey respondents)
- Period Covered
- 2025 AFL home fixtures (March–August)
- Location Basis
- Purchase postcode (verified via ticketing platform)
Keep other sport figures in context
The Australian Sports Commission's AusPlay tables provide national, state and territory participation estimates. They describe participation in sport and physical activity, not the home locations of a particular team's spectators or the audience of a sponsor sign. The tables warn that their later results are not directly comparable with 2015–2023 results because collection changed.
Keep attendance, followers and broadcast viewers in separate lines. The groups may overlap and their location methods may differ. A single combined ‘local reach’ figure would hide those limits.
Make the geographic decision
Map service area → proposed right → audience location evidence → missing share → response route. A business serving a few suburbs might assess an approved activity at selected home fixtures; a national business might assess a broader channel. Either still needs evidence for the asset it is buying.
Proceed when the overlap is credible and the response can be served. Narrow the proposal or seek evidence when the location basis is weak. Decline a marketing-led proposal if the relevant audience is largely beyond the business's service area. After delivery, report the locations and definitions actually available rather than relabelling a national figure as local reach.
